Head of IAEA considers it possible to conclude an agreement on ZNPP before the end of the year

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi spoke about the “good dialogue” with the presidents of Russia and Ukraine, Vladimir Putin and Vladimir Zelensky, regarding the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant. In his opinion, it is possible to conclude an agreement to ensure the safety of the station before the end of 2022. Mr. Grossi said he hoped to visit the Russian Federation again soon and meet with Mr. Putin.
“I think it’s possible. We had a very good dialogue with President Putin and President Zelensky. It is important that there is an agreement on the basic principles for the protection of nuclear power plants. It is possible, but we need to work further,” Mr. Grossi told reporters during a visit to Argentina (quoted from TASS).
Asked if he plans to visit the Russian Federation again and meet with Mr Putin, the head of the IAEA said: “I hope so. And hopefully as soon as possible.”
Mr. Grossi met with Mr. Putin on October 11 in St. Petersburg. After that, the head of the IAEA reported on progress in the issue of ensuring security around the Zaporizhzhya NPP. Russia for now thinks demilitarization of the station is impossible. According to Moscow, if the nuclear power plant is left without the Russian military, it will be attacked by Ukraine.
ZNPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Russia took control of it at the end of February, at the beginning of the military operation in Ukraine. At the end of September, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed documents on the inclusion of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, as well as the Donetsk and Luhansk people’s republics, into Russia. In October, ZNPP became the federal property of the Russian Federation.
