Gref reported the largest DDoS attack in the history of Sberbank – Kommersant

The head of Sberbank, German Gref, said during a press conference that about two weeks ago the bank faced the most powerful DDoS attack. According to him, recently cyber attacks have become more qualitative due to the fact that “new, very skilled criminals” have appeared on the market.

“If we talk about DDoS, the last attack was probably two weeks ago. This was the most powerful attack in our history. It was about three to four times more powerful than the most powerful before,” said Mr. Gref (quoted by Interfax). The agency reported, citing Sber’s press service, that hackers tried to disable the bank’s website by sending the largest number of requests per second in the bank’s history. According to Interfax, hackers sent 1 million requests per second.

German Gref clarified that on average the bank faces ten attacks per month. According to him, hackers have not yet managed to break through the first of the three protective circuits of the bank. “We noticed that these are some new hackers, their handwriting is not known to us. That is, some new, very qualified criminals appeared on the market and began to systematically engage in attacks on the largest Russian resources,” said Mr. Gref.

Last time about the most powerful DDoS attack in the history of the bank reported June 16, 2022. Then the deputy chairman of the board of Sberbank, Stanislav Kuznetsov, said during a speech at SPIEF 2022 that on May 6, an attack was carried out on the bank’s website. According to him, the malicious traffic generated by the botnet came from more than 27 thousand devices in Taiwan, the USA, Japan and the UK.
