The Russian government approved a bill that would criminalize the illegal circulation of stolen personal data. This was announced by the deputy head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy Anton Gorelkin.

“Today it became known that the concept of the relevant bill received a positive conclusion from the government of the Russian Federation. I hope that the punishment envisaged by the authors of the document will indeed turn out to be severe – otherwise I will insist on toughening responsibility, ”the deputy wrote in Telegram-channel.

Mr. Gorelkin noted that the introduction of turnover fines for companies that have leaked personal data of customers is also being discussed. This bill has been discussed since the spring of 2022, and at the end of last year, the Ministry of Digital Development announced that the document was ready. However, the text has not yet been published. “As I understand it, this issue is going through the Cabinet of Ministers more difficult, but it is already close to the final stage,” he specified.

According to Kommersant, for turnover fines for leaks of personal data, an upper limit of 500 million rubles can be set, and a lower limit of 5 million rubles. The ceiling is provided in case the company has leaked data again since the entry into force of the law and violated a number of regulator requirements, for example, tried to hide the incident.
