Google invited Russian operators to connect to its servers directly. This should solve the problem of slowing traffic, but not for long, experts say. Market participants told RBC that several operators have already listened to the corporation’s initiative. Meanwhile, in its letter, the IT giant warned that from January it will stop transmitting traffic through routing servers at exchange points. What does it mean? And what will change for users of the American company’s services, including YouTube? Daniil Babkin sorted it out.
Having sent a letter to operators in Russia, the corporation is trying to somehow correct the situation with the servers. She operates a large Google Global Cache network in her country, which distributes traffic across regions. Huge streams from YouTube are also processed, thanks to which videos on the hosting open quickly and in good quality.
But the infrastructure has not been updated for almost two years, and now users are noticing a slowdown in traffic, explained Alexey Boyko, an analyst on the Telegram channel abloud62: “Now these servers, on the one hand, are slowly becoming unusable, and on the other, they are overloaded. The remaining infrastructure accounts for a larger volume of data, which leads to an even faster process of overloading it.
On YouTube, video display may already be slow, or videos may not start immediately. Google proposes to expand border connections by directly connecting Russian operators to the corporation’s overseas infrastructure.”
But will Russian operators agree to this? Kommersant FM’s interlocutors suggest that at least the Big Three will agree to more actively expand direct connections with Google. At the beginning of December 2023, analysts were already warning that YouTube could slow down in Russia even without the efforts of Roskomnadzor next year. According to some estimates, since the beginning of 2022, the number of Google caching servers in Russia has decreased from 700 to 450. The company is not forced to service Global Cache in Russia, recalled IT specialist Philip Kulin:
“The story here is quite simple: the corporation cannot update its equipment due to sanctions. Among other things, it is generally not clear how to organize its supply.
Since everything will be transported through third countries, it will cost more. Google always matches the speed of the content it displays to the channel the user has, and the corporation tries to automatically lower it. VK does the same.”
It is possible that by switching to direct contact with Russian operators, Google is simply trying to save on content transfer. The CEO of the Oxygen data center Pavel Kulakov has another version. According to him, the company is trying to minimize the influence of the Russian authorities on its traffic: “This is probably an attempt to bypass the technical means of preventing threats that are currently installed by the Main Radio Frequency Center on the networks of telecom operators to filter Internet traffic.
This is a legislative initiative, and the installation of these complexes is actively underway, this also applies to traffic exchange points. Perhaps the creation of direct connections with the largest telecom operators in the Russian Federation will allow Google to avoid passing traffic through the corresponding filtering nodes.”
Although, among the reasons why YouTube has not yet been blocked, they also named the same Global Cache network. It was not easy to target video hosting without affecting other services of the corporation, analysts said. They assume that this task will become easier after the Global Cache servers go down.
