Deputy Chairman of the Russian Government Tatyana Golikova presented the first Hermitage Prize to the artistic director of the Mariinsky Theater Valery Gergiev and the artistic director of the ballet troupe of the Mikhailovsky Theater Juan Ignacio Duato Barcia.

After the ceremony, which took place in the Winter Palace as part of the Forum of United Cultures, the Deputy Prime Minister said: “Today the Hermitage Prize was presented here as a sign of respect to outstanding cultural figures of our time.” Golikova emphasized that the prize winners “created their works not only here, but all over the world.”

The prize was established by the organizing committee of the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum and the State Hermitage Museum. It is planned to be awarded annually to two iconic cultural figures – from Russia and from abroad.

The name of Valery Gergiev has not left the news feeds in recent days due to his possible appointment as director of the Bolshoi Theater. But the maestro himself is in no hurry to confirm or deny the personnel decision.
