GoDaddy announced its withdrawal from Russia amid tightening regulation of hosters

The American company GoDaddy, which provides domain registration and Internet hosting services, announced that on December 31 it will close the accounts of customers who “may be located in the Russian Federation.” The email that Kommersant’s correspondent received did not indicate the reason for the termination of work with clients in Russia. In October Roskomnadzor banned search engines to display links to GoDaddy and 11 other large foreign hosters due to their refusal to open representative offices in Russia, and on December 1, new requirements for hosting providers came into force in the country.
The company asks to initiate the transfer of domains managed through GoDaddy to another registrar by the end of the year. “You have until December 31, 2023 to begin the process of transferring affected domains to the registrar of your choice, subject to restrictions on domain acceptance by other registrars… For other products, access to all data and content stored by us will cease as of December 31, 2023 , and we will not be able to provide you with access to backup copies,” follows from the letter.
GoDaddy became the third foreign hoster to stop working with Russian clients after Roskomnadzor requirements in 2023. Previously, the FastComet company announced that from October 1 it would stop providing services to Russian citizens and cut off access to the site from the territory of the Russian Federation, and Hetzner informed clients with a Russian address in their personal account that due to the “tense geopolitical situation in Russia” it was terminating contracts with them from January 31, 2024.
According to the amendments to the laws “On Communications” and “On Information” that have come into force, from February 1, 2024, only those hosting providers that have entered the register of hosters formed by Roskomnadzor will be able to operate in Russia. Current hosters must apply to join the register by December 15th. Companies operating under Russian laws will have to identify your clients through payment, phone number or documents provided in person.
