At the end of 2022, the global stock and bond markets lost more than $30 trillion. This is the highest figure since the end of the global financial crisis in 2008. The heaviest losses in the markets were caused by inflation, rising interest rates and the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The newspaper reported Financial Times (FT).
The MSCI All-World broad index of developed and emerging markets stocks has lost a fifth of its value, the FT notes. Also, the S&P 500 index fell by almost 20%, the Nasdaq index – by 33%. Indices of Chinese exchanges fell by 22% in yuan and 28% in dollar terms, the MSCI Europe index – by 16% in dollar terms and 11% in euro.
According to the FT, the cryptocurrency market lost $1.7 trillion in 2022. The publication also notes the fall in US stocks. Electric car maker Tesla has lost nearly two-thirds of its value, chip maker Nvidia 50%, Apple and Microsoft almost 30%, Alphabet (Google’s parent company) 40%.
At the end of 2022, the Moscow Exchange Index collapsed by 43%, from 3787.29 to 2154.12 points. The RTS dollar index fell by 39.18% from 1595.76 to 970.60 points.
