The German government is discussing the possibility of imposing a ban on the export to China of a number of chemicals that can be used in the production of advanced semiconductors. This was reported with reference to its own sources in the German government. Bloomberg.
If the German authorities take this step, the sources say, German companies such as Merck and BASF will not be able to sell some of their chemicals to China. The German Ministry of Economy declined to comment on this information.
Germany has already imposed a number of restrictions on China. For example, last November the German government blocked opportunity for Chinese investment in two local semiconductor manufacturers. And in March, the German media reported about the intention to ban the use of Huawei and ZTE equipment and components in local 5G networks.
Last fall, US President Joe Biden, guided by the interests of national security, imposed a ban export to China of modern American technologies, including microchips. Later, the Netherlands and Japan, two other major exporters of microchips, joined the sanctions.
