German gas storage facilities reach 100% occupancy

The filling level of natural gas storage facilities in Germany has reached the 100% mark. This is evidenced by the data of the European Gas Storage Association (GIE) published today, November 15, and summary German Federal Network Agency.
As of November 14, the cumulative volume was recorded at 245.44 terawatt-hours, slightly above the 100 percent mark of 245.39 terawatt-hours. For comparison, a total of just under 227 terawatt-hours of natural gas was consumed in Germany in January and February 2022, according to the Federal Grid Agency.
“The volume of working gas indicated by the gas storage operators indicates the provided capacity,” said the head of the Federal Grid Agency, Klaus Müller, on November 14 in the evening, when the figure was just below 100% (quoted from Handelsblatt). “The volume of working gas specified by the storage operators indicates the secured capacity of the storage. This does not always correspond to physical possibilities, so some storage facilities may store more gas. Therefore, storage can continue even at a filling level of 100%,” explained the German Federal Network Agency.
At the EU level, the filling level of storage facilities was 95.6%.
EU due to liquefied natural gas (LNG) lowered dependence on Russian gas by 33%. Imports of Russian gas in October in the European Union amounted to 7%, in previous years the figure was at the level of 40%. According to the autumn economic forecast of the European Commission, gas from Russia was replaced by LNG supplies.
At the same time, Germany remains the largest consumer of gas in Europe, and it has suffered more than others from the suspension of Russian gas supplies via Nord Stream.
