Georgia has become a leader among exporters of still wines to Russia, ahead of Italy. About it informed “Kommersant” with reference to customs data.
In the first five months of 2023, the supply of Georgian wine to Russia increased by 63% to 24.15 million liters. For comparison: Italy exported 23.36 million liters of wine, up 31% compared to last year. As a result, the share of Georgia in the supply of still wines to Russia in volume reached 19.1%, and Italy – 18.5%.
Spain (20.46 million liters), France (10.04 million liters) and Portugal (9.61 million liters) are also among the top five in the supply of still wines to Russia.
Experts attribute the growth in the supply of wines from Georgia to several factors. In particular, according to Alexander Lipilin, executive director of the Fort wine trading company, the growth in the share of Georgian wines is associated with the absence of problems with payment and logistics, it is also provided by own imports from retail chains in the low and medium price segment. In addition, zero import duty applies to Georgian wines, Alexander Stavtsev, head of the WineRetail information center, adds. According to him, the supply of Italian wines may be constrained by difficulties with payments, rising exchange rates and higher prices for certain items.
After the start of the special operation in Ukraine, the US and EU countries imposed large-scale sanctions against Russia, which, among other things, affected the import of alcohol. Thus, the United States completely banned the shipment of alcohol, and the EU limited the supply of products more than 300 euros per unit of goods.
