Members of the European Parliament (EP) called for sanctions against Gazprombank, its subsidiaries, members of the board of directors and management, reports Frank Media. This initiative was included in the resolution on the effectiveness of anti-Russian sanctions of the European Union (EU), adopted on November 9.
EP press officer Viktor Almqvist clarified that voting on this topic was carried out by raising hands, so the exact data on how many parliamentarians supported the idea is unknown. It is unknown what legal force the call to impose sanctions against the bank has and in what time frame the restrictions can be implemented.
According to the text of the resolution, EP deputies are dissatisfied with Brussels’ approaches to the development and application of sanctions against Russia. They expressed concern that there were many loopholes to circumvent the restrictions, and also criticized measures aimed at the Russian energy industry.
Severe EU and US sanctions were not imposed against Gazprombank, thanks to which the bank can still carry out settlements abroad. As EuObserver reported, Poland and the Baltics back in April called EU disconnect bank from SWIFT.
