The Arbitration Court of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region accepted the claim of the Gazprom Export company to prohibit Europol Gaz from continuing proceedings at the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce. This decision is discussed in the material in card index arbitration cases.
Gazprom Export’s lawsuit was a response to Europol Gaz’s nearly $1.5 billion lawsuit against the Russian company due to the cessation of Russian gas supplies. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 26.
Europol Gaz owns a section of the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline in Poland. The company itself is owned by Russia’s Gazprom (MOEX: GAZP) and the Polish oil and gas company PGNIG. In May 2023, Europol Gaz filed a lawsuit against Gazprom, which concerns “lost profits” due to the interruption of gas supplies. In January 2010, the parties extended the gas supply contract until 2037, which was supposed to end in 2022.
Pipeline supplies stopped in March 2022. The Russian company explained this by Poland’s refusal to pay for gas in rubles. PGNIG called the supply stoppage a breach of contract and said it would seek damages.
