FSB accuses NATO and US of cyberattacks against Russia from Ukraine

Since the beginning of 2022, more than 5,000 cyber attacks have been carried out on Russia’s critical infrastructure, the FSB reported. The intelligence service claims that the negative consequences of cyber attacks were avoided. Based on the results of the analysis of computer threats, the FSB came to the conclusion that the United States and NATO countries used the territory of Ukraine to carry out attacks.
“In the course of the analysis, data was obtained indicating the use of Ukrainian territory by the United States and NATO countries for conducting massive computer attacks on civilian facilities in Russia. Currently, the network infrastructure of Ukraine is being used by units of offensive cyber operations of the Western countries, allowing them to covertly use new types of cyber weapons, ”the FSB said in a statement (quoted by TASS).
From the FSB report, it follows that in order to conceal its involvement, the United States seeks to present the Ukrainian hacker group IT Army of Ukraine as the author of cyber attacks. The computer threats themselves, according to the Russian intelligence service, are being developed with the direct participation of the Pentagon’s joint command in cooperation with international and national hacker groups. Among the countries whose national groups are involved in the development of attacks, the FSB indicated the United States, Turkey, Georgia and Poland.
“The FSB of Russia has the ability to identify specific individuals, organizations, as well as real customers involved in hacker attacks on Russian infrastructure, and bring them to justice,” the intelligence service said.
After the start of the military operation in Ukraine, the websites of Russian departments and major banks are regularly subjected to hacker attacks. In March, Kommersant’s interlocutors said that Russian state institutions, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were attacked by the XDSpy hacker group. What country these hackers work for is unknown.
