Artificial intelligence is no competitor to genius
The International Cultural Forum began its work in St. Petersburg. Ninth in a row. Because of the pandemic, three flew past like plywood over Paris, that is, over St. Petersburg. And then the ninth opened. Participants from more than 70 countries, including the CIS, SCO, BRICS and other friendly states. The business program has nine thematic blocks, and the names of some of them sound intriguing: for example, “Artificial intelligence – a threat or a benefit to culture?” or “Cinema – shaping the image of the future. The era of great space discoveries.” But at the same time, the words “tradition” and “heritage” are correctly integrated into new technologies, promotion and development.
At the main headquarters of the Hermitage, where the Forum is taking place, it is very difficult to manage the time – one discussion overlaps with another, and you want to be on time everywhere. The first, “Common Stage: Cooperation of Theaters as a Symbol of the Unity of World Cultures,” was opened by Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova. Her brief, business-like introductory speech – and away we go: the artistic director of the Theater of Nations, Yevgeny Mironov, as a real moderator, takes bread from the official moderator of the discussion, Marina Yudenich, and bombards his Chinese and Japanese colleagues with questions: how popular is Soviet and Russian literature among them? What do they put?
They answer: they bet a lot – and they immediately move from informational content to artistic content, without saying a word, resorting to the image of Chekhov’s Lopakhin, who, as you know, bought a cherry orchard.
Japanese director Miura Motoi – director, theater company Chiten – talks about his way of playing Chekhov. “Our theater is called “Tochka”, and they say about us that we speak pointwise, that is, we arrange the rhythm in such a way that the language sounds like a foreign one.”
And Evgeny Mironov reports that both Japanese and Chinese directors will stage plays in his theater. Let’s see how Russian becomes foreign. The director, artistic director of the Joburg Theater from South Africa, James Ngcobo, was remembered for the fact that he spoke so infectiously and temperamentally about his huge theater center in Johannesburg that Mironov, catching a second pause in his bright speech, remarked: “Now I know how to play Othello.” .
The Red Hall was occupied by filmmakers who started a discussion about the cinema of the future. Ernst and Bondarchuk were in charge, although the film gathering was moderated by the director who now knows the most about space, Klim Shepenko. Konstantin Ernst, taking the floor, proposed sending artists into space first, but at the same time regarding the orbit not as a reference for creators, but solely as a metaphor. The head of the First Federal Channel, discussing the filming of films about space and the future, in particular, said:
— The world is now in a state of flutter (a state of instability, trembling). This process is natural—the centers of power change. But sooner or later everyone leaves flutter, having clarified not only the economic, but above all the ideological basis. At one time, it was cinema that pulled America out of the Great Depression. People need a behavioral explanation, and good cinema is an explanation of time and behavior patterns. If books today are just a pretext for a good movie, then cinema in Hollywood sank at the end of the 20th century because it relied on teenagers. Hollywood cinema has ceased to have a cumulative effect. Now we have the opportunity to speak time through cinema. Therefore, I believe that artists should be the first to go into space in order to pull everyone with them into the future.
And film producer Ruben Dishdishyan just reported a sensation: his company bought the rights to the image of Yuri Gagarin from his heirs. “It was not easy, and we are now starting to film the series about Gagarin,” he said. To which director Alexei Uchitel asked the question: “To what extent do we have the right to show Gagarin not as an icon, not as a symbol of the country, but as a person? Frankly? And then he said that he was already starting to film a series about the Queen. At the same time, Konstantin Ernst rightly noted that in the history of our cinema there is already a wonderful film about the Queen, who was brilliantly played by Kirill Lavrov – this is “Taming of Fire”.
But the most vivid discussion has revolved around artificial intelligence. They talked a lot, it was interesting, Presidential Advisor for Culture Vladimir Tolstoy summed up: “Artificial intelligence will kill artisans, but it is not a competitor to genius.”
And there are still two days of work ahead, debriefing and problems in the music world, innovations in the cultural sphere, and so on. And on Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected in St. Petersburg.
