Despite difficulties with logistics, Italian winemakers increased their exports to Russia by 16% year-on-year in 2022. In general, wine worth €172 million was imported into Russia from Italy last year, according to the Italian Association of Agricultural Producers Coldiretti. Thus, according to the association, last year Italian winemakers occupied about a third of the Russian market of imported alcohol, overtaking Spain and Georgia.
Since EU sanctions prohibit the export of alcohol to Russia for more than €300 per bottle, mid-range drinks and cheaper wines are imported from Italy. In 2022, the largest increase — by almost 30%, to €48 million — was shown by the supply of prosecco to Russia, Coldiretti reports, citing data from the Italian National Institute of Statistics. In general, sparkling wines accounted for more than half of Italian drinks sold in Russia: they accounted for more than €91 million, up 28% year-on-year. The export volume of still wines grew by only 5%, to €81 million. The main deliveries of wines to the Russian market came from Tuscany, Sicily, Piedmont and Veneto.
