FMBA of Russia will buy radiation pills for almost 5 million rubles

On the portal of the Unified Information System in the field of procurement (EIS Procurement) appeared position for the purchase of potassium iodide in the amount of 4.85 million rubles. The drug is used, among other things, to protect the thyroid gland during nuclear or radiological emergencies. According to the UIS data, the purchase of the pharmaceutical substance is carried out by order of the Federal State Unitary Enterprise SPC “Pharmzashchita” of the FMBA of Russia.

Similar cards for the purchase of potassium iodide appear every year. At the end of December 2020 and the beginning of March 2021, cards were placed in the system indicating the purchase of the drug for $56,000.

Previously Russian marketplaces Ozon and Wildberries reportedthat from April to March 2022, sales of a drug that protects against radiation increased by 103%. Reuters also wrote that demand for potassium iodide and other preparations containing it has increased in European countries. According to the agency, stocks of the drug were made by residents of France, Poland, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria, where demand for it exceeded the figures for all of 2021. A shortage of potassium iodide tablets has also been encountered in the United States. According to The Daily Mail, American citizens feared possible nuclear war and incidents at one of the nuclear power plants in Ukraine.
