“First Theater” in Novosibirsk withdrew from the show a performance in which a man plays a female role

In Novosibirsk, the children’s play “The Princess and the Ogre”, suspected of LGBT propaganda, was excluded from the repertoire of the First Theater. The press service of the theater noted that the performance was suspended for a while.
“We are closely monitoring the information field around the theatre. Unfortunately, the production caused a wide response and received mixed opinions from the audience. This was not our goal. We do not want to be the subject of controversy in society, because art is designed to unite people, give pleasant emotions and talk about important things, ”the theater’s press service said.
“In the current situation, we consider it inappropriate,” declared at the First Theatre.
In the Ministry of Culture of the Novosibirsk Region Kommersant-Siberia it was reported that one of the spectators complained about the performance, who, in an appeal to the Ministry of Culture, asked for comment on the choice of the image of the Princess, which is performed by a male actor. As a result, the department organized an audit of the performance. It was reported that on November 20, 2022, the performance will be viewed by the “expert theater community of the region and members of the public council under the Ministry of Culture of the Novosibirsk Region”, after which a discussion of this production will be organized. However, on November 20, it became known that the performance for the audience was canceled for technical reasons.
Earlier, the director of the play, Polina Kardymon, commenting on the situation to Kommersant-Siberia, said: “The reason for checking is a man in a skirt. We will not change anything in the production.”
The First Theater operates in the status of a state autonomous institution of the Novosibirsk Region. The premiere of the performance in the genre of “children’s choir-or” marked “6+” on its stage took place on October 29, 2022. The performance was based on a poem by Heinrich Sapgir, only four actors are involved in the performance – all men.
