Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen said that Finnish companies probably will not return to Russia in the coming years. She indicated that after the end of the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Finnish business will not be among the first to decide to return to the Russian market.
“There is no end in sight to the war in Ukraine, and Finnish companies will not return to do business in Russia next month or next year. Who knows what will happen in a few years. But Finnish companies are unlikely to be the first to return to Russia,” Ms. Valtonen said in an interview with the media group RND.
The head of the Finnish Foreign Ministry also noted that compared to countries such as Germany, Greece, Italy and Austria, Finland has much fewer connections with the Russian economy.
According to a study by the Center for Strategic Research, by September 2022, 80% of Finnish organizations announced they were leaving Russia. In July 2022, Trade Representative of the Russian Federation in Helsinki Anton Loginov saidthat 140 Finnish companies have reduced their business in Russia. Due to sanctions imposed in response to Russian military operations in Ukraine, Finland also banned individuals import fuel from Russia, as well as limited import of Russian strong alcohol.
