FAS will check retail chains for overpricing of dairy products

Deputies of the State Duma Committee on Agrarian Issues turned to the FAS with a request to check retail chains for overpricing for dairy products. About it report “Izvestia” with reference to the text of the letter. The Federal Antimonopoly Service confirmed receipt of the appeal, and work is underway on it.
The document sent by the FAS deputies notes that in 2023, the purchase prices for raw milk dropped sharply. Its cost is 15-20% of previously contracted prices.
Deputies attribute the fall in prices to the complication of the foreign policy and economic situation, increased inflation rates and a reduction in real incomes of the population. As a result, people began to buy cheaper dairy products.
At the same time, due to “weak domestic and external demand”, excess of planned supplies by 14% and proposals from the Union State, stocks of dairy products formed in warehouses. In 2022, the increase in stocks amounted to about 38%, the agricultural committee said.
The deputies believe that the growth of consumption of dairy products and demand is hindered by the pricing policy of retail chains. The Duma Committee noted that markups are 40-70% and higher, and for high-margin products – up to 100-150%. Because of this, the cost of raw milk decreases and the price for the consumer increases.
Oleg Nilov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Agrarian Issues, drew attention to the fact that the purchase prices for milk “fell not by 1 or 2%, but by several dozen”, to 17 rubles. per litre. At the same time, in stores the cost of milk reaches 80 rubles. The deputy called such a situation strange.
Earlier, RIA Novosti, citing data from the Center for the Development of Advanced Technologies reportedthat in the first quarter of 2023, the most expensive dairy products in Russia were cheeses and cheese products. Their cost in terms of one liter/kilogram amounted to 760 rubles. The top of the most expensive dairy products also includes cottage cheese curds (687 rubles).
