ExxonMobil Vice President Arrested on Rape Charges – Kommersant

ExxonMobil Senior Vice President David Scott was arrested last Thursday, October 5, by Texas State Police on charges of criminal sexual conduct, reports Reuters. The police announced the incident only today, October 9. The top manager heads ExxonMobil’s entire shale business, and his arrest coincided with the American oil giant’s negotiations to buy Pioneer Natural Resources.
Mr. Scott was arrested early Thursday morning at the La Quinta Inn & Suites in Magnolia, Texas. ExxonMobil’s headquarters are located in the same state. According to police, the company’s senior vice president was detained in his hotel room after receiving a call from one of the two women he was with at the hotel that morning. One of his companions went down to the hotel lobby, where she called the police. Mr. Scott was charged with second-degree assault, which carries a prison sentence of 2 to 20 years. According to jail records, his bail was set at $30,000, which the executive has already paid.
ExxonMobil said it is aware of the allegations against the company’s senior vice president. “We are aware of the allegations and cannot comment on personal matters, but we can say that this individual will not continue to perform work duties while the investigation continues,” company spokeswoman Emily Mir said in a statement.
On October 5, it became known that ExxonMobil was close to purchase Pioneer Natural Resources. The deal could be worth approximately $60 billion and would be the company’s largest deal since Exxon and Mobil merged in 1999. The acquisition of Pioneer would make ExxonMobil the dominant player in the Permian Basin.
Mr. Scott himself was most recently in charge of ExxonMobil’s Permian Basin operations before being promoted this year to senior vice president in charge of the company’s shale oil and gas business. It is still unknown whether Mr. Scott participated in negotiations with Pioneer and whether his arrest will affect the deal.
