The reason for stopping production at Sakhalin-1 was the refusal of the operator of the Exxon project to ship oil to Sovcomflot tankers, which, due to sanctions, lost coverage from Western insurers, Kommersant found out. Sovcomflot attracted a Russian insurer, but Exxon was not satisfied with this, and the company refused to resume shipments.
In April, Exxon announced a force majeure event at Sakhalin-1, as a result of which production began to decline. In May, it completely stopped due to the overflow of tanks with oil in the port of De-Kastri, from where it is shipped to the world market. In October, the Russian authorities transferred control of the project from Exxon to Rosneft.
