Experts spoke about attempts by scammers to steal phone numbers

Fraudsters try to steal victims’ mobile phone numbers by replacing or restoring a digital SIM card – eSIM. About this specialists FAS.S.T. told “Lente.ru”.

According to experts, scammers create an application on the operator’s website or application on behalf of the user to transfer a number from a physical SIM card to a digital one. This way they gain access to the phone. After this, criminals can obtain access codes for two-factor authentication and various services.

“Fraudsters are most interested in online banking services. Messages with a confirmation code that will be sent to the number will allow you to withdraw all the money from the victim’s account and issue loans,” said Dmitry Dudkov, a specialist in the Fraud Protection department of FACCT.

Experts recommended enabling two-factor authentication, using complex passwords, and changing them regularly. It is also recommended to monitor messages about re-issuance and blocking of the SIM card.

According to Kommersant’s information, the Central Bank, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Digital Development, Roskomnadzor and market participants are discussing the creation of another anti-fraud platform for joint work of banks and telecom operators. It will be a “centralized system for countering transactions without the client’s consent based on data from financial institutions and telecom operators.”
