EU energy ministers fail to agree on gas price ceiling

The energy ministers of the EU countries did not agree in Brussels on the maximum price for gas, said Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó. According to him, discussions will continue at the bilateral level. This was stated by the Hungarian minister on Facebook (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
“A long debate took place at the meeting of the Energy Council, no agreement was reached at the plenary meeting, so the discussions will continue on a bilateral basis,” Peter Szijjártó wrote.
In addition, the minister believes that the gas price ceiling is the wrong decision of the EU, as there is an energy crisis in Europe now. According to Mr. Szijjártó, this restriction will jeopardize the security of Hungary’s energy supply.
The European Union was going to impose restrictions on gas after the adoption of the agreement on the ceiling on oil prices.
December 11 Bloomberg citing European MPs reported about disagreements among the EU member states on the issue of gas price restrictions. 12 countries demanded lowering of the proposed gas price ceiling. In particular, the Czech Republic called for lowering the ceiling price to €220.
Earlier, the European Commission proposed a plan according to which the price ceiling will come into effect if the price of gas on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange exceeds €275 per 1 MWh (about $3,000 per 1,000 cubic meters) for at least two weeks. The difference with the LNG price must exceed €58 for at least ten days.
