Elevator production in Russia fell by 41% in the first half of the year

The volume of production of elevators in Russia for the first half of the year decreased by 41% compared to the same period last year, to 9,000 units, informs “Kommersant” with reference to Rosstat data. At the same time, in previous years, growth was observed in this segment: in 2019, the volume of production increased by 16%, in 2020 – by 18%.
The decline in production is due to several reasons. Firstly, this is due to the withdrawal of foreign manufacturers and suppliers from the Russian market against the backdrop of a special operation on the territory of Ukraine, says Alexei Li, an expert at the NEO Center consulting company.
At the end of July, the American elevator manufacturer Otis announced the sale of the Russian business to Ice Development (part of the S8 Capital holding), and it stopped accepting orders for new equipment in early March. According to the National Elevator Union, Otis occupied 16% of the Russian elevator market – second only to Shcherbinsky Elevator Plant with a 20% share.
A month earlier, at the end of June, the Finnish manufacturer Kone announced the sale of the Russian business to local top managers and the complete withdrawal from Russia. After the closing of the transaction, the company will start operating under a new name, the cost and structure of the transaction were not disclosed. This company occupied 3% of the Russian market.
In early June, developers reported to Forbes that there was a shortage of complex, high-speed elevators to be built to fit a specific building. It was on such elevators that the manufacturers who left the Russian market specialized.
Secondly, a decrease in production may be observed due to a reduction in construction volumes during this period in the country as a whole, suggest in Dom.RF. In addition, many developers have postponed the launch of some projects and therefore did not order elevators now, says Elena Mironova, head of the price monitoring department at Granel Group of Companies.
Also, among the possible reasons, one can name a decrease in the volume of financing of regional capital repairs programs by 30%, Dom.RF noted. In particular, in the Moscow region, only 800 elevators are scheduled to be replaced this year, which is 30% less than in 2021, Li confirmed.
