Ecuador provided Russia with justification for lifting ban on banana imports

Minister of Foreign Trade of Ecuador Sonsoles Garcia in an interview with a TV channel Ecuavisa stated that the country will provide Rosselkhoznadzor with a justification in order to lift the ban on the import of Ecuadorian bananas. Previously, the Russian department limited Ecuadorian banana imports by 30%.
“The Ecuadorian government wants to deal with this from a technical point of view, and we are confident that we can refute any arguments against the export of our bananas,” Ms. Garcia said. She said that all the necessary documents had been submitted to the Russian department. “These supplies to Russia are directly related to 25 thousand jobs and more than 3 thousand small producers,” the minister summed up. According to “RIA News”in 2023, Ecuador exported 6.5 million tons of bananas, with 21% to Russia.
According to the minister, the first notifications from Rosselkhoznadzor about the humpback fly in Ecuadorian bananas appeared in 2018, and since then the ministry and companies have taken the necessary measures. She emphasized that the insect’s life cycle is 24 days, while bananas are in transit – 40. According to Sonsoles García, cholera, which is spread by these insects, has not been reported in Ecuador since 2014.
February 2 Rosselkhoznadzor expressed concern over “systematic detections” of humpback flies in Ecuadorian bananas and suspended the certification of five Ecuadorian banana producers as of February 5. According to Rosselkhoznadzor, the humpback fly has high fertility, including indoors, and is also a carrier of cholera. Fly larvae penetrate the tissues of animals and humans, settling in skin wounds, intestines, lungs, on the mucous membrane of the eyes, and in the organs of the genitourinary system. On February 6, the department announced an increase in banana supplies from India.
