Dobronravov didn’t ask Putin anything: “They gave the president tea”

How the legendary couple received the head of state in their modest home
The outstanding poet of our time, Nikolai Nikolaevich Dobronravov, has passed away. Their union with Alexandra Nikolaevna Pakhmutova was truly legendary. The recognition of the authors of Soviet and Russian hits was so great that Russian President Vladimir Putin came to visit them on Pakhmutova’s 75th birthday. The head of state brought the birthday girl a birthday cake, a large bouquet of flowers and, naturally, asked if the star couple needed any help? But Pakhmutova and Dobronravov did not take advantage of the moment and did not ask the president for some kind of special “donation”.
Later, I asked Nikolai Nikolaevich why they didn’t turn to the president with a request, for example, for new living space? The legendary couple lived in a modest, Soviet, three-room apartment with a small kitchen and one bathroom. A large room there is completely occupied by a piano, shelves with books and musical scores. Once, famous authors complained in a conversation that there was practically nowhere to store the archive. “The President would certainly help you in this matter,” I noted.
“We have nothing to do with it, Tanechka,” Nikolai Nikolaevich answered me (he was always very tenderly affectionate with his interlocutor), “We are sure that Putin would not refuse us.” But moving at such a serious age is very difficult, Alya and I thought and decided that we don’t need anything. They just gave the president some tea.
Nikolai Nikolaevich, however, noted that Vladimir Vladimirovich is a very attentive and insightful person with an excellent memory.
“At the time of his visit, a friend of ours was in our house, Putin turned to her: “I saw you somewhere!” And very quickly I remembered where and under what circumstances.
