Director Otar Ioseliani dies – Kommersant

Soviet, Georgian and French film director Otar Ioseliani died at the age of 89, his friend photographer Yuri Rost reported. Mr. Ioseliani is the author of the trilogy “Falling Leaves” (1966), “Once Upon a Time There Was a Song Thrush” (1970) and “Pastoral” (1975).
The director was born on February 2, 1934 in Tiflis. In 1965, Otar Ioseliani graduated from the directing department of VGIK. Since the early 1980s, the director worked in France, where he shot “Favorites of the Moon” (1984), “And the Light Became” (1989) and “Robbers. Chapter VII” (1996). All three films were awarded a special jury prize at the Venice Film Festival.
In 1992, Otar Ioseliani directed “The Hunt for Butterflies”; this film received the F. Pasinetti Italian Film Critics Award at the Venice Film Festival and the Andrei Tarkovsky Foundation Award at the XVIII International Film Festival in Moscow. In 1999, Mr. Ioseliani’s film “Farewell, dear home!” was released. — in it the director played one of the main roles.
