Producer Alexander Rodnyansky (recognized as a foreign agent) said on the air of Dozhd (recognized as a foreign agent) that the director Kantemir Balagov, who shot Dylda and Tightness, will continue to work in films and has already written a “wonderful English-language script.” In early April, Balagov announced his retirement from cinema on social networks.

“Kantemir Balagov will, of course, (work.— ”b”) director and he is working on his next film. I was surprised by the emotional reaction of so many media outlets that decided to respond to the emotional statement of a talented young director who reacted to one of the plots related to the development of the film,” said Mr. Rodnyansky.

According to the producer, the director is currently in the United States and this year will start shooting the film according to his script in English. Mr. Rodnyansky noted that he was “dealing in detail” with a new painting by Mr. Balagov.

April 6 Kantemir Balagov wrote on Twitter: “I’m all over. Two films are more than enough.” After that, he deleted the account. Mr. Balagov condemned the military operation in Ukraine and left Russia.

In October The Hollywood Reporter informedthat Kantemir Balagov, who was supposed to direct the pilot episode of The Last of Us series, based on the video game of the same name, left the project. The director confirmed the information. According to the publication, at that moment he was working on his first English-language film called “Butterfly Jam” about the relationship between father and son – emigrants from Kabardino-Balkaria in New Jersey.

Kantemir Balagov is a graduate of the studio of director Alexander Sokurov at the Kabardino-Balkarian University. With “Closeness” (2017), Mr. Balagov made his debut at the 70th Cannes Film Festival. The film received the FIPRESCI award from the International Film Press Federation. In 2019 at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival was shown “Dylda”. The film won the award for best director. The film was also named Best Foreign Language Film by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA).
