American comedian Paul Reubens, whose character Pee-wee Herman became a cultural phenomenon through movies and TV shows, died at the age of 70 on July 30. For six years, the actor fought cancer without advertising it, according to a statement from his representative on Instagram (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

Mr. Reubens created Pee Wee Herman in the late 1970s, The Pee Wee Herman Show debuted in 1981.

The character, in an overly tight gray suit, white loafers, and a red bow tie, is best known from Tim Burton’s debut film Pee-wee’s Big Adventure (1985) and the television series Pee-wee’s Playhouse. It ran for five seasons and won 22 Emmy Awards.

“Please accept my apologies for not making public what I have been experiencing for the past six years,” the actor said in a statement released alongside the announcement of his death (quoted from CNN).
