At the end of the year, the turnover of Russian fitness clubs exceeded 170 billion rubles, which is almost 12% more than in 2022, follows from the results of a study by the National Fitness Community. According to their data, the clubs’ revenue increased in all key areas. For example, sales of club cards this year exceeded last year’s figures by 12%, and in 2023, clients began to purchase additional services more often by 8%. At the same time, attendance at fitness clubs also increased by 8.5%.
As the founder and CEO of the Orange Fitness and City Fitness chain Anastasia Yusina notes, 2023 really turned out to be successful for the industry: “The current year has indeed become unexpectedly positive for the fitness industry. We have noticed an increase in attendance. Clients who were previously quite difficult to reach by phone to say that they have a card and do not use it, now come to the club themselves. We are seeing an increase in family memberships.
This is probably explained by the fact that fitness for consumers is included in the same expense item as rest, travel, and leisure.
And since a certain part of anti-stress therapy is now unavailable to the Russian consumer, sports centers have replaced foreign trips and vacations. We are glad that this has had a positive impact on the industry. In 2024, we have planned a 15% increase in both club cards and additional services.”
At the end of this year, the total number of operating fitness clubs exceeded 9 thousand. Moreover, over the past few years, more than 5 thousand establishments have been liquidated. And the costs of opening new clubs have increased significantly due to increased prices for building materials and the sports equipment itself.
This inevitably affects the cost of subscriptions, explained Nikolai Pryanishnikov, CEO of the World Class network. So he expects the industry’s recovery may slow next year: “We’re seeing interest in healthy lifestyles, which is great. But still, I cannot yet say that there is any outstanding dynamics. We simply calmly and joyfully celebrate certain positive changes and look positively into the future. Now we are recovering from Covid. In fact, before the pandemic, the industry was developing and growing steadily. Then there was coronavirus, then SVO began and some indicators decreased. Some left, some were in anxious anticipation. Now we have actually recovered.
Next year the pace will slow down. In 2023, the industry was undergoing a recovery; now only organic growth in visitors will remain. The main thing is to withstand the increase in costs. The cost of opening a new club has increased by 30%, it is really difficult to survive.
Rising costs are reflected in the cost of subscriptions. With the rise in construction and equipment prices, we are forced to index prices.
Nevertheless, we try to do it softly and carefully, so that it is not too noticeable for clients, and they continue to buy subscriptions and train.”
However, the National Fitness Society expects revenue growth next year to exceed this year’s figures, at 18%. And in monetary terms, the volume may exceed 200 billion rubles.
