Cross-border Internet for scientists to be tested in Guangzhou – Kommersant

The authorities of the Chinese city of Guangzhou are going to test the creation of a cross-border Internet with limited access for scientists. This is written by the Hong Kong South China Morning Post referring to the statement of the Guangzhou authorities.
This innovation should make it easier for researchers to access foreign scientific sources in the face of the so-called Great Firewall of China, a system for filtering and censoring Internet content in China. Because of this, many foreign sites and services are not available in the country, and scientists have to use VPNs and other ways to circumvent restrictions.
The pilot project will provide an opportunity to use cross-border Internet in one of the districts of Guangzhou – Nansha. At the same time, only scientists and students included in special lists will have access to it.
The project is part of the wider Greater Bay Territory initiative. It provides for the expansion of economic, scientific and other types of cooperation between Guangzhou and Hong Kong and Macau.
