Court in Poland overturns record fine to Gazprom for building Nord Stream 2

A Polish court overturned the regulator’s decision to impose fines on Gazprom and European partners in the construction of Nord Stream 2. In October 2020, Poland fined Gazprom and its Nord Stream 2 partners PLN 29.08 billion (€6.46 billion) and PLN 234 million (€52 million). This was comparable to 70% of the investment in the project (€9.5 billion).
“Financial penalties were imposed on Gazprom and other project participants. The employers have appealed this decision. On November 21, 2022, the Competition and Consumer Protection Court annulled the decision,” the Polish Competition and Consumer Protection Authority said in a statement. UOKiK.
In addition to Gazprom, Poland also fined Shell, Engie Energy, Uniper, OMV and Wintershall in 2020. Representatives of UOKiK intend to appeal today’s court verdict – the organization also said that the companies participating in the project have not created a common enterprise, as required by law.
