Counterfeit United Arab Emirates (UAE) dirhams have been detected in Russia for the first time, the Central Bank reports. According to the regulator, one counterfeit banknote of the UAE national currency was discovered in the country.

“510 counterfeit banknotes of foreign countries were identified in the third quarter of 2023. Of these, 291 counterfeits were detected in July, 110 in August, and 109 in September. Among the detected counterfeits, the majority were counterfeit US dollars (428). 80 counterfeit euros were discovered. In addition, counterfeit Chinese yuan (1) and UAE dirham (1) were discovered,”— explained at the Bank of Russia. The denominations of the fakes are not specified.

Statistics on detected counterfeit banknotes have been kept by the Central Bank since 2010. During all this time, no counterfeit dirhams were reported.

The Bank of Russia clarified that in the third quarter of this year, 2,284 counterfeit five-thousand ruble banknotes, 140 two-thousandth ruble notes, and 570 counterfeit banknotes with a face value of 1,000 rubles were identified. The least number of counterfeit banknotes detected was in denomination of 10 rubles (one). Also, 45 counterfeit coins of 10 rubles and 21 of 5 rubles were identified.

In general, according to the Central Bank, the number of detected counterfeit money in Russia in the third quarter of 2023 amounted to 3.1 thousand, which is 31% less than in the same period last year. According to the Central Bank report, most of the counterfeit banknotes were registered in the Central Federal District.
