Once again, we bring you our list of “The World’s Best in Serving Art Collectors.” Now the restorers have reached their hands. I myself am interested in how Western experts feel about these most important operators of the art market.
Conservators can restore art if it is damaged, but their job is ultimately to understand the work itself: how it was created, what materials it is made of, and how to preserve it.
Operating under a strict code of ethics, they are trained not only in art history, but also in studio art and materials science. Preservation specialties range from metal preservation to ceramic pots and glass sculptures, from wood carvings and canvas paintings to video and digital works.
They often work closely with curators and other experts, and even use techniques from fields such as medical imaging, biochemistry and geophysics.
So, Amann+Estabrook, the restorers are known for their work in the fields of abstract expressionism, color field, minimalism and pop art, as well as art of the first half of the 20th century.
ArtCare. Founded by Rustin Levenson in New York in 1982, the company works with commissioned galleries from Gagosian, Hauser and Wirth & Pace, as well as institutions such as MoMA and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, to restore works from the 14th to the 21st centuries.
