Companies paid a record $416 billion in dividends in the third quarter

Global companies paid $415.9 billion in dividends in the third quarter of this year, according to a new Global Dividend Index by Janus Henderson. This is 7% more than last year and is a new quarterly record.

As noted in the report, the record volume of payments is associated primarily with oil companies. Thanks to a significant increase in oil and gas prices, these companies were able to significantly increase their shareholder payouts. In the third quarter, payments increased by 75% compared to last year, and their total volume reached $46.4 billion – a new record for the industry. The authors of the report note that without such a significant increase in dividends in oil companies, the global volume of payments in the quarter would have remained approximately at the same level as in the third quarter of 2021.

According to the results of the whole 2022, Janus Henderson predicts, the volume of dividends paid will be $1.56 trillion. Thus, the annual growth of payments will be at the level of 8.3%.
