Cinemas cannot use their equipment for IMAX due to the withdrawal of the company from the Russian Federation

Russian cinemas cannot show films in IMAX, despite the fact that the equipment belongs to them. Screenings require permission from the Canadian company IMAX, which gone From Russia. The ban also applies to Russian films, said Alexei Vasyasin, director general of the united cinema network Cinema Park and Formula Kino.

“Technically, a projector can show any movie. Another issue is that it is impossible to show a film in IMAX format without IMAX permission. Even Russian films in this format – “Movement Up”, “Stalingrad” – now, unfortunately, we cannot show, because there is a direct ban on the use of the format by the company,” said Mr. Vasyasin RBC.

The general director of the United Cinema Network believes that the Canadian company will return to Russia as soon as possible. However, Russian cinemas will revise the terms of the contracts in order to exclude the possibility of a unilateral withdrawal.

Mr. Vasyanin believes that if IMAX refuses to return to Russia, the company faces legal proceedings. “We will use this equipment to show movies in a different format. We have a very strict contract with them, according to which they are obliged to work here. If they don’t remember about this contract by the end of this year, there will be a trial,” he added.

IMAX has left the Russian Federation since the beginning of June. All employees of the Russian office were fired. The Vice President for Eastern Europe, India and the Middle East, who worked in Moscow, moved to London.
