On August 3, the press service of the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China announced the termination of the shipment of sand to Taiwan. Prior to this, the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China imposed sanctions on 2,000 out of 3,200 items of Taiwanese food products. These are retaliatory measures in connection with the visit to the island of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress Nancy Pelosi.
Taiwan ranks second in the world in terms of semiconductor production, accounting for 26% of the global market last year. According to the Taiwan Mining Administration, the island imported 15,703 tons of sand from China in the first six months of 2022, including quartz, necessary for the production of semiconductors, as well as silicon, with a total value of $934,000. This represents 1.88% of all sand imports to the island. In 2020 and 2021 70,000 and 170,000 tons were delivered from China.
