Chinese authorities have initiated an investigation into the Taiwanese company Foxconn, the world’s largest iPhone manufacturer. In August, the company’s founder announced his candidacy for Taiwan’s presidency, saying he would “not give in to China’s threats” if Chinese authorities pressured his business.
According to the Chinese state newspaper Global Times, Foxconn’s facilities in Guangdong and Jiangsu provinces are being inspected by China’s tax authorities, and those in Henan and Hubei provinces have been inspected by natural resource officials. The reasons for the investigation are unknown.
The Foxconn press service reported that the company will cooperate with the Chinese authorities. “Compliance with laws and regulations is a core principle of the group worldwide. We will actively cooperate with the relevant authorities,” the company said in a statement, citing Financial Times.
In August, Foxconn founder and billionaire Terry Gou announced his candidacy for the presidency of Taiwan. Forbes Terry Gou’s net worth is estimated at $7.4 billion, making him the sixth richest businessman in Taiwan.
In a message to the people of Taiwan, Terry Gou said he plans to bring “50 years of peace to the Taiwan Strait” and lay the “deepest foundation for mutual trust” between Taiwan and China. He said that Taiwan “should not become the next Ukraine.”
