The Chinese company Fourier Intelligence presented the GR-1 humanoid robot at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai at the end of July. The company plans to begin mass production of the robot by the end of 2023 and have “thousands of units” on the market by 2024. Hong Kong newspaper reported Southern China Morning Post (SCMP).
The GR-1 humanoid robot is capable of moving on two legs at a speed of 5 km/h and carrying a load of up to 50 kg. It has been under development since 2019. In 2022, the developers were able to put the robot on two legs and make it walk.
“When we first saw him standing, untied and walking on his own, it was a great inspiration for all of our engineers. It was like raising a newborn baby,” Alex Gu, founder and CEO of Fourier, told SCMP.
According to him, Fourier Intelligence humanoid robots can be used to care for the elderly, for educational purposes and for receiving guests.
Experts interviewed by SCMP noted that companies developing humanoid robots face difficulties in their implementation in the consumer market. Such robots are mainly used in laboratories and can cost millions of yuan.
