The Chinese government has set a goal of creating a network of 26 thousand satellites in low Earth orbit, covering the entire planet, reports Nikkei.
Back in 2021, the state-owned enterprise Guowang (China Satellite Network Group) was created, which will be responsible for creating a network of 13 thousand satellites. The company plans to launch about 10% of them in the next five years. They should also help the authorities deploy 6G mobile networks by 2034. To accomplish this task, construction has begun on a site for commercial satellite launches near the Wenchang Satellite Launch Center, one of the country’s large rocket launch sites, in the southern province of Hainan. Guowang satellites are also planned to be launched from here.
In addition, in July 2023, the Shanghai government announced the creation of its own G60 Starlink satellite Internet project. The Shanghai authorities, through the Shanghai Spacecom Satellite Technology company, intend to launch more than 12 thousand satellites into orbit, about 600 of which by 2025. The plant for the production of these satellites has already begun its work. Its capacity is up to 300 devices per year.
The private company GalaxySpace Technology intends to launch about 1 thousand more satellites into low Earth orbit. Finally, the military-industrial complex enterprises CASC and China Aerospace Science and Industry Corp. they plan to launch more than 300 and 200 low-orbit satellites, respectively. And the company Chang Guang Satellite Technology, supported, in particular, by the government of Jilin Province, began launching its own satellites into low orbit back in 2015. Their number should reach 138 by 2025.
