China increased LNG supplies from Russia by 47% over eight months – Kommersant

During the period January – September, supplies of liquefied natural gas from Russia to China increased by 47%, to 6.2 million tons. Oil supplies over the same period increased by 24.4%, to 79.9 million tons. This follows from data General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China.

The cost of LNG supplies during this period decreased by 6% compared to the same period last year, to $4 billion. In September, China purchased 746 thousand tons of Russian LNG, which is a quarter less than in August. Russia now ranks third among the largest suppliers of LNG to China, behind Australia and Qatar.

Pipeline gas supplies from Russia to China increased by 60% year-on-year, to $4.98 billion. Since 2022, the volume of pipeline gas supplied by Russia has not been indicated. Among suppliers of these raw materials, Russia ranks second, behind Turkmenistan.

The cost of oil supplied to China during this period decreased by 2.3% in annual terms, to $43.6 billion. Russia is the largest supplier of oil to China, followed by Saudi Arabia and Iraq. In September, China imported 8.7 million tons of oil from Russia, which is 17% less than in August.

On October 19, a Russian-Chinese energy business forum took place in Beijing. On it, the head of Gazprom Alexey Miller and the chairman of the board of directors of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) Dai Houliang signed agreement on additional gas supplies to China via the Power of Siberia gas pipeline. The issue of Russian gas supplies to China was discussed the day before the forum by President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
