Kommersant FM columnist Dmitry Butkevich talks about the transformations the theater life of the capital is going through.
The past year for the Russian theater will be remembered for drastic changes. Of course, as usual, both theater directors and artistic directors changed: some left, others simply changed venues.
But the main change awaited us already in December, when almost the entire secretariat of the Union of Theater Workers was re-elected. The place of Alexander Alexandrovich Kalyagin, who, by the way, is already 81, was taken by my peer – 60-year-old Vladimir Lvovich Mashkov. As they say, make way for the young. But seriously, hard work awaits the new chairman and the new secretariat. Many believe that the domestic theater is in a deep professional crisis.
By the way, I don’t think so. This year I saw Yevgeny Kamenkovich’s magnificent performance at the Fomenko Workshop “The Twenty-Third” based on Remarque. I saw the wonderful work of set designers Vladimir Arefiev at the theater. Mayakovsky in the play “Love according to Marquez” and Zinovy Margolin in the theater. Pushkin in “Zoyka’s Apartment”. I haven’t seen it yet, but I’ll definitely go to “Cosmos”, there, in the Pushkinsky Theater, with the magnificent Victoria Isakova (many people call the play the main hit of the season). Already quite good, in my opinion.
Changes also occurred in the management of all Moscow theaters at once. Natalya Drozhnikova left, and then her former management of theaters and concert organizations was completely abolished. What about the management, the Minister of Culture of Moscow has also changed.
Alexey Fursin became the head of the depcult instead of my old friend Alexander Kibovsky. I’ve heard good reviews about him: he’s passionate about ideas and is able to implement them. Let’s see!
A striking event was the cancellation of, perhaps, the main domestic theater competition, “Golden Mask,” to which there were many complaints, and I too. But, as GITIS rector Grigory Zaslavsky told me in a New Year’s interview, (spoiler) the new STD secretariat decided to renew the award.
