ByteDance plans to close its gaming division Nuverse, reports Reuters with reference to own sources. The company confirmed this information to the agency, but refused to provide any details of this process.

“We regularly review our business and make adjustments to focus on long-term strategic growth areas. Following a recent review, we have made the difficult decision to restructure our gaming business,” a company spokesperson said.

According to sources, company management will notify employees of its decision in the coming days, while some employees learned about it over the weekend. The company intends to cease development of all gaming products that have not yet been released. The same games that are already on the market will be transferred to other game publishers. The decision will not affect only casual games launched on TikTok and its Chinese version Douyin.

Nuverse was created in 2019. ByteDance restructured its business in 2021, with Nuverse becoming one of the company’s six core divisions that management has focused on. However, over the years, ByteDance has not produced a single truly successful game.
