British "Zone of Interest" wins Oscar for best international film

The Auschwitz drama Zone of Interest won the Oscar for Best International Film. This is the first time the award has been awarded to a British film. Other contenders for the award in this category were “Perfect Days” (Japan), “I Am Captain” (Italy), “Snow Society” (Spain), and “Teacher’s Room” (Germany).

Jonathan Glaser’s Zone of Interest previously won the Cannes Film Festival Grand Jury Prize and other awards. The film was nominated in four Oscar categories (Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best International Film).

The events of the film take place during the Second World War on the territory of the Auschwitz camp. The film follows the commandant’s family as they build their dream life in a house across the fence from the camp.
