The description of the lot states that in 1986, only 40 bottles of The Macallan 1926 60-year-old were bottled from sherry casks. According to Sotheby’s, these bottles were not available for purchase, but were offered to leading Macallan clients. Of the 40 bottles released in 1986, 14 featured the Fine and Rare label. One of these copies was sold at auction for a record amount in 2019.

The bottle sold at the latest auction is the only one that was refurbished at The Macallan distillery before being sold. The procedure involved replacing the capsule and stopper, applying new adhesive to the corners of the labels and taking a 1ml sample of the liquid for comparison with another 1926 bottle at Edrington’s Glasgow office, the auction house said.
