BMW invests £600m in ‘historic’ plant in Oxford – Kommersant

The BMW Group intends to preserve the “historic” MINI plant in Oxford by investing £600 million in it, it reports with reference to company employees Financial Times. The plant will receive another £75 million from the British government.
According to FT sources, the plant will begin production of new models of MINI electric vehicles from 2026, although the batteries for them will be supplied from Europe or China. In addition to the Oxford plant, both models will be produced at a joint venture between BMW and the Chinese Great Wall in China itself.
The plant in the Cowley area of Oxford has been in existence since 1914. It was originally owned by Morris Motors. During a series of mergers, followed by nationalization, reprivatization and division of companies, the plant was called differently. This plant began producing the “original” MINI model in 1959.
The BMW Group acquired the MINI brand in 1996 from its then owner, the Rover Group, and retained it after selling the remaining Rover assets in 2000.
