BMWs imported through parallel imports have their CarPlay function disabled in Russia. Judging by complaints on social networks, as soon as the car determines that it is on Russian territory, the standard media system stops seeing the smartphone. As experts say, the problem can be solved – to do this you need to disable the telemetry unit. Then CarPlay will work, but some other functions will be disabled.

The problems of expensive foreign cars imported through parallel import are not limited to this. Thus, official dealers of BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz cannot create and program new keys due to the fact that car manufacturers left the country and turned off their services for Russians.

Problems with CarPlay and some other functions do exist, confirmed the founder of the Fresh automotive marketplace Denis Migal: “Various problems are appearing in BMW, Range Rover, and other brands. But they cannot yet be identified as common. For example, that CarPlay always crashes in the same situation. So far, the problems are more random in nature, and there are no universal solutions today.

This could be due to completely different situations, for example, due to Western companies turning off support for machines. Or there may be a serial defect that cannot be repaired, because there are no dealer warranties for cars imported after February 24, 2022.

This applies to any electronic systems, but every cloud has a silver lining. Now many services are trying to figure this out, installing some custom firmware and updates. Yes, it doesn’t always work as expected, but it works. The free market finds solutions to these issues, but, of course, the risk that the situation will worsen every year remains.”

The number of problems with a number of functions of luxury cars imported into the country through parallel imports is likely to increase in the near future. And the owners will have to come to terms with this, believes the editor-in-chief of the Za Rulem magazine, Maxim Kadakov: “I think that the number of these problems will not decrease in the next year or two. It is quite possible that it will grow.

Companies, most likely, do not make sense to continue to support these functions, spend time on this, any human or technical resources, etc. The owners will either have to come to terms with this, or take some preventive measures. The simplest thing is to understand that if, say, you lost one BMW key, then you should immediately make a duplicate. This can be done relatively easily if you have one working native key, although this is also a tricky task, but our people have learned to solve it.

And if it turns out that you have lost two keys, then the car practically turns into a brick. And it is quite possible that if no antidote is found, you will have to give up some functions that are related to telemetry in order to drive a car of the brand you are used to, well, in this case, BMW.”

As reported by ixbt.com, an Audi dealer representative said that keys cannot be made at this time. A BMW dealer representative stated that fulfilling an order for a new key through an importer would never be possible. A representative of Mercedes-Benz noted that now you can only block a lost key, but not order a new one.
