Bloomberg: Turkey will ask Russia for a 25% discount on gas supplies

Turkey intends to achieve a discount of more than 25% on the supply of Russian gas. Ankara plans to discuss the conditions for reducing import prices during negotiations with Moscow tomorrow, December 9. This is reported Bloomberg with reference to high-ranking Turkish officials.
According to the agency, the Turkish side expects that the discount will be applied not only to payments for 2023, but also to payments made in 2022. If the parties fail to agree on a price reduction, Bloomberg clarifies, Ankara intends to achieve a deferment of payments for the supply of Russian gas until 2024.
A deal with Russia could ease pressure on the Turkish lira, which has fallen 37.8% since early 2022 to 18.6 per dollar, according to the agency. In addition, the deal could help incumbent Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan avoid higher energy prices ahead of the 2023 presidential election.
From the data of the Turkish Institute of Statistics (Turkstat) shouldthat, following the results of October 2022, the import of Russian mineral fuel, in particular coal, oil and natural gas, decreased by 25%.
