Bloomberg: Turkey asks Russia to defer gas payments until 2024

As Turkey seeks to cushion the economy from higher energy prices, it is asking Russia to defer some of its natural gas payments until 2024. This is reported Bloomberg with reference to sources close to the Russian-Turkish negotiations.
According to the publication, the Turkish state-owned company Botas is participating in the discussion of the postponement. An interlocutor close to Gazprom, in a dialogue with the agency, noted that the Turkish side has not yet filed an official request for a delay – this will become possible when Botas receives a corresponding offer from the Russian company.
In 2022, the Turkish lira depreciated by more than 28% against the US dollar, which is attributed, among other things, to the country’s heavy dependence on energy imports. Formerly Turkey and Russia agreed on the transition to partial payment for energy resources in rubles: according to Russian President Vladimir Putin, now up to 25% of Russian gas supplies to Turkey will be paid in Russian currency.
