Bloomberg: Russian coal exports soar after easing EU restrictions

Maritime exports of Russian coal approached record levels after the European Union eased restrictions on its transportation. Coal deliveries from the Russian Federation in October amounted to almost 16.6 million tons, which is slightly less than the June volumes, which were record-breaking since at least 2017. This is reported Bloomberg with reference to data from the analytical company Kpler.
August 10 EU banned export of coal from Russia. In September, according to the agency, the European Union allowed European companies to deliver, finance and insure Russian coal delivered from Russia to countries outside the EU as measures to combat the energy and food crisis.
According to Kpler analyst Victor Katona, after the start of the military operation, Russian coal began to be redirected to Asian markets. Among the largest importers in October are Turkey (2.4 million tons) and China (6 million tons), the agency reports the words of Katona. However, the study does not take into account coal delivered by rail. The use of coal in the world has risen sharply since the start of the military operation, as countries look for a cheaper alternative to the rise in price of natural gas, the agency notes.
